Quilts that have left a lasting impression...

Have you ever had an artistic expression of  W O W? Two quilts from the early 1980's left a big impression on how I perceive quilts. The first is Chris Wolf Edmonds "George Washington at Valley Forge" - 1976. (Watkins County Museum, Lawrence, KS)
The beauty of the work and the silent implication of prayer gives a depth of meaning to this quilt. Art (yes - quilts are art) can be about capturing a moment expressed in various medias but the ones that touch me the most are the ones that impart meaning or understanding of a special moment in time. The second quilt tells a story.
Featured in Country Living magazine, Nov 1985, it was made by Sophia Fairfield Wheat from McLean, Va. It is her family's history in an embroidered quilt. Stunning in detail...

A family treasure.

Quilts to me, the special ones that stay in my heart, are the ones that have meaning. They preserve a memory of a significant event; Baby, Friendship, Weddings, Accomplishments, Farewells, Retirements, Memorial. Quilts have the extra dimension of touch, texture, size and usage, and the ability to add memorabilia. I do enjoy the fun, learning, and scrap quilts. But the special quilts that preserve and honor a memory are the ones that live within me.

Preserving Memories

There are so many memories from the quilts I've made, happy, sad, friendships etc.   This blog will be the one place they are all preserved. Whether I am feeling nostalgic or searching for a design I've previously done, this blog will be the go-to place even when I'm 100!
Autograph Quilt -
Signed on the white stabilized strip in each block. The center and corner blocks were designed especially for the receiver. In this quilt, it was a special gift commissioned as a Farewell Gift  from a unit. The unit crest was cross-stitched and appliqued and yellow roses for Texas are in the corners.
