My sister recently sent me the old Groene family picnic quilt. I remember many picnics at Uncle Joe's farm on the Walnut River. It had a sandbar for sunbathing, swimming, and fishing. We gathered on the quilt for the best fried chicken, potato salad and cookies.
All I could save were 10 blocks. I just love the blue and red colors and found a grayish blue Grunge fabric for the background.
The quilt was actually machine quilted! Definitely an old one though, many fabrics were totally shredded and faded. I soaked it in RetroClean which brightened it. The batting was thin enough that I could piece it together. It's the first quilt I designed the stitching layout for using ProStitcher Premium Simulation then stitched on my new Handiquilter Avante. A big thanks to MKquilts.com for her excellent class in Layout and Rendering #1 to jumpstart my learning in this software.
I love the stitch texture and the quilt- batting - a soft medium weight Hobbs cotton/wool blend

I will definitely "save" more old quilt tops and quilts.
